JANET JACKSON'S BREAST AND THE MAGIC OF TIVO
So lemme get this straight...advertisers spent, like, a gazillion dollars per minute to hawk their products during the Super Bowl last night, and professional athletes spent a better part of half a year of their lives playing the game they love to play in this championship and all the buzz today is about...a breast?
Justin Timberlake claimed it was due to a "wardrobe malfunction" and the executives over at MTV claimed it was completely unintentional--but can we honestly take either of them seriously? When was the last time Janet Jackson caused any kind of buzz? Does she really expect us to believe this was not an attempt to "shock" us all?
The sad part is, it's really not that shocking. At my own Super Bowl gathering, through the magic of TiVo, the event was replayed frame-by-frame, in slow motion; just so we could all drink in our fill. When we were all satisfied, we moved on. Not the least bit shocked or outraged. It was at this point that I realized that my children, as well as the children of some of my friends, were watching the same thing upstairs. I became saddened that this is what has become acceptable on prime time television in this country. I have nothing against nudity, mind you. I think the human body is beautiful. I simply believe that sexuality is for adults, and not for children. I wish the major networks felt the same way.
Here it is in all its glory. On national televesion. For me and you. For my children and yours. We are truly living during the fall of Rome...
